A few times a Year the European Summit finds itself drawn to Brussels (The European Council) as also over 500 reporters. And they all want to work and get on-line without any problems.
The Zaventem (Brussels/Belgium) based ict-services organization Prodata System, previously also responsible for the fixed network infrastructure in the Justus Lipsius building, has now also expanded the network. It has installed a wireless network (WLAN) in the Atrium section of the building. Not an evident task, as expected for multiple reasons.
When hundreds of reporters have the desire to send and receive their information (read: articles, video footage, pictures) the WLAN needs to be prepared for this demand. In particular when the majority of them need full and guaranteed access at the same time. "One of the very constant attention points for the support is the diversity of equipment and applications that are used by the reporters that gather here from all corners of the World and expect configuration and troubleshooting support. A maximum level of compatibility with the existing and new equipment, applications and content needs to be warranted", stated Mr. Bart Carbonez, director at Prodata.
A second complexity is caused by the 1700 square feet large dome-shaped roof of the Atrium which is positioned almost 50 feet above the ground floor.
"Because the installation of the access points had be on a height of almost 50 feet, Prodata could not use regular access points with a wide coverage antenna spectrum. In order to ensure sufficient coverage and to avoid interference specific directional antennas were used", Mr. Carbonez concluded. Prodata Systems selected Nortel- (now Avaya) and Trapeze Networks equipment for this deployment. The combined network (wired + wireless) exceeded a value of 8 million Euro's (approx. $M 11.2).´
